Problems with Microsoft Word

Q: When I try to open "Word" and also when I tried to retrieve .doc files from "My Documents", in these situations I get messages such as "The system is dangerously low on resources" OR "There is not enough memory to run word" OR "Explorer caused a general protection fault in GDI.EXE at 0001.00009fd3". Help!!!

A: Most problems with Microsoft Word are caused by a corrupted normal.dot file - especially 'out of memory' errors. Click
Start > Find > Files or Folders and do a search for normal.dot
delete all the files you find of that name then try Word again - and you should find that then you'll be alright!

Q: I cannot operate word properly, it keeps coming up saying word cannot open the existing (normal.dot) and when I try and shut it down is says the file Normal.dot already exists. Do you want to replace the existing file? When I click it away it takes me into a save in area. Beyond me.....can you suggest anything. ??

A: You have a corruption in the file normal.dot, the Word template.
Click on Start > Search > for Files or folders and search for normal.dot
Windows may find more than one of these. When you see them listed in the right hand pane, delete all/any normal.dot files found. Then start Word - and you should be right! Word will re-create a new normal.dot file and one that is not corrupted.

Q: I can't access WORD on my home PC. The message I get is "Not enough memory or disc space to run this programme" and then another error message which says: "Winword has caused an error in USER.EXE. Winword will now close. Try restarting……" Restarting doesn't work. In fact I couldn't even close WORD so have to turn the power off at the wall. I know this is a no-no but I had no choice. This happened several times - so I gave up. Can you help please?

Q: I am having trouble with Microsoft Word. Every time I use it, when I go to close down it tells me there are corrupted program files and my 'global template' needs to be repaired. How can I stop this madness!

A: This is a known problem with Microsoft Word - which also means that there is a well-defined and easy solution to it! Click Start > Run and paste the following in and hit 'OK': "C:\PROGRAM FILES\MICROSOFT OFFICE\OFFICE\WINWORD.EXE" /A
Include the quotation marks and the /A. This resets Word back to its default settings and restores the corrupted settings. The problem lies with the global template called 'normal.dot'. Another way to solve this problem is to find this file on your computer and delete it. Word will re-create a new (and repaired!) one of these next time you start it up.
